History of Acura RL Navigation System and GPS

The Acura RL is known as the flag ship vehicle from this Honda-owned Japanese car company – with the RL in the model name standing for Refined Luxury – and who are we to argue?  The first ever Acura RL was seen in the United States in 1996 and is still being manufactured today for the American market.

The 2000 RL model was when customers first started to see the Acura Navigation System in place, and that year saw a larger screen than typically seen in Acura vehicles – in addition to that the range saw the advent of the easy to update Acura Navigation DVD software which let the customer update the maps from a disc install – which was a new way of thinking for many factory-installed GPS devices seen in other car brands.

The Acura RL Luxury Car

By 2004, the navigation system had become a standard fit, so anyone who purchased an RL model would benefit from the Acura GPS system with no additional costs – because this is Acura’s luxury car model there are no exceptions when it comes to additional extras and add-ons.

The 2005 RL models started to use an Alpine navigation system which was different to previous versions, as this one let drivers change destination whilst on the move.  It also allowed for voice navigation letting the driver speak directions, place names, and streets – and the unit would recognize the speech and then navigate straight to the destination.

Changes to the 2006 range saw the addition of a rear-view camera being added into the Acura Navigation System so drivers were able to reverse into tighter parking spaces a lot easier.  However, the rear-view camera was an optional extra and needed to be added when buying from the car dealer.

Later models from 2009 onwards added further improvements to the GPS to include items like XM satellite-linked traffic flow reporting and real-time weather reports.  This linked into the functionality where the GPS will re-route whilst driving depending on what the traffic conditions were like.
